Summary

Part III opens by attacking the foundation of business wisdom: the belief that studying successful companies teaches us how to succeed. Kahneman draws on Nassim Taleb's #narrativefallacy — our compulsive construction of simple, coherent stories about the past that assign outsized roles to talent and intention while minimizing luck. The Google story illustrates perfectly: two creative Stanford students make a series of brilliant decisions, each turning out well, and build one of the most valuable companies on Earth. The narrative feels like it explains Google's success — but it doesn't. Almost every critical decision could have gone differently, and at one point the founders were willing to sell for under $1 million. No account of Google's success can pass the ultimate test of explanation: would it have made the event predictable in advance?

The #illusionofunderstanding has a specific mechanism: WYSIATI from Chapter 7 meets the #haloeffect from Chapter 7. Because we only see what happened (not the countless events that didn't happen), and because System 1 generates coherent stories from available information, the past always looks inevitable.
